5th Grade Field Trips

History Day
Spring 2019

Our annual colonial History Day takes place in the Spring, and is just what we need after the long, cold winters in the Ice Box of CT.

Our full day immersion into the life of a colonial child begins with visiting the Little Red School house in town for an in depth look at colonial education with a professional school marm. We then head to the Norfolk's Center Cemetery to study the past residents of the town and create grave rubbings.

After a traditional lunch, we separate into groups to practice calligraphy with ink and quill pens and play games colonial children often played.

Hartford & the State Capital Building
Fall 2018

Our trip to Connecticut's state capital and the Capital Building takes place every other year in the spring, and we are accompanied by the fourth grade class.

This field trip usually begins with a stop at the Connecticut Historical Society, where their staff guides students through a role playing activity that combine Connecticut's history with our Social Studies unit of choice.

A short bus ride to the Capital Building follows, where students are given the history of the building, a tour of the Senate and House chambers, and even have the chance to meet some of our elected officials!

Old Sturbridge Village

Our trip to Sturbridge Village takes place every other year in the spring and we are accompanied by the fourth grade class.

Old Sturbridge Village is the largest outdoor living history museum in the Northeast United States, and depicts rural New England Town of the 1830s. This hands on exploration of our ancestor's lives allows us to explore working farms and water-powered mills, interact with artisans and tradesmen traditionally making their craft, and view authentic dress of the period.

Norfolk Curling Club
Winter 2019

Each year, 4th, 5th and 6th graders complete a physical education unit on curling, which has been a special pass time to the town of Norfolk with the curling club located in town. At the end of the unit, students move from the gym floor to the ice as they practice using real curling equiptment for the morning.
